Undertow (Contracorriente) is set an a tiny Peruvian seaside village, where traditions are valued and where Miguel, a young fisherman, and his beautiful bride, Mariela, are about to have their first child. Miguel however has a secret. He's fallen in love with Santiago, a painter, who is ostracised by the town because he's gay. Following an accident Miguel is forced to choose between Santiago or doing right by his wife in turn though revealing their relationship to Mariela and the entire village.
Written and directed by Javier Fuentes-León, Contracorriente (Undertow) is a tale of legend, tradition and it is in these details that the truth lies. Stunningly photographed to accentuate the majestic Peruvian coastline, this is a love story that will transcend time.
